Our festival is a gathering of people who play, listen, sing, or dance to
the music of Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), Irish harper and composer.

Introduction to English Country Dancing- with Sharon Schenkel to live music played by members of "Hearts Ease"- Gail Griffith, Patricia Kernan, Marilee Urbanczyk from Albany, NY area.  (click for List of Tunes & dances) (same as in 2017). (More modern English Country Dances are done to Carolan tunes, than to those by any other composer, other than Anonymous!) Experienced dancers available and happy to help beginners!

12:45-1:45 PM Session: John's Favorites- with John Mallery 


1:45-2:45 PM  Tune Workshop (all instruments): with Andrea Mori-  "O'Reilly of Athcarne" #138  & "Father Brian MacDermott Roe" #84. Andrea will provide copies of the music in both music notation and ABC's. (O'Reilly transposed to a friendly key for traditional instruments).



10:30 AM-Noon "Challenging Fiddle Workshop"- with Cathryn Norris (8 Max. - Advance sign up and practice expected): "Mrs. Cole" #15 - please use Festival Tune Book version. The tempo is quarter note = 132. The Workshop group will perform in the Open Stage Concert.

12:45-1:45 PM "Super SLO MO" Session (all instruments): for New Players and Laid-Back More Advanced Players (think "comfy") led by Cathryn Norris: Sheebeg & Sheemore, Fanny Power, Blind Mary, Hugh Kelly, Captain Henry O'Kane, Mrs. Edwards, Lord Inchiquin, The Fairy Queen, Carolan's Dream, Carolan's Cup, The Seas are Deep

1:45-2:45 PM  Song Workshop: with Gord Fisch - Learn two songs set to Carolan tunes:  Bridget Cruise 3rd Air and Lament for Terence MacDonough. All voices welcome.



11:00-Noon "Carolan Standards" (easier tunes, slower tempo): Sheebeg & Sheemore, Fanny Power, Blind Mary, Col. John Irwin (59), Captain O'Kane, Eleanor Plunkett  (click for "Standards" sheet music)  & "Carolan Favorites" Session (moderately difficult): Carolan's Draught, Carolan's Concerto, Geo. Brabazon 2nd Air, Bridget Cruise 3rd Air, Lord Inchiquin, Morgan Magan, Mrs. Maxwell 1st Air  (click for "Favorites" sheet music)- with Bob Paul

12:45-1:15 PM  Upper Valley Music Center (UVMC) ECD Ensemble rehearsal before Afternoon ECD

1:15-2:45 PM   English Country Dancing (on the lawn): Sharon Schenkel, Wendy Gilchrist, & Bruce Kokernot will teach English Country Dances (more modern English Country Dances are done to Carolan tunes than to those by any other composer, other than Anonymous!)- to live music by Open Upper Valley Music Center ECD Ensemble including Martha McDaniel, Laura Coppock, Dana Wright, Dave Beaufait, and YOU (Festival musicians welcome to sit in) 


HARPERS'  HAVEN (ongoing)- Leaders/Facilitator: Mary Paul


ANYWHERE (ongoing)- impromptu ensembles and partners gather!


~2:45-3:00 PM PROCESSION down the hill to open the Afternoon Performances! 


MAIN TENT (3:00-6:00 PM for all activities):

3:00-4:00 PM   Dance Performances & Demonstrations with Festival Musicians- Style of your choice, or be creative! Request a tune, or dance to whatever is being played. Irish Step Dancer Gerlisa Garrett will lead Irish Ceili Dancing and perform solo!! She placed in numerous National & Regional Irish Step championships, plus competed at The Worlds!  Gerlisa received her Teaching certification (TCRG) in 2017.  Sean Nós (old style) Irish dance performance byYasi Zeichner; Scottish and English Country Dance performances, Waltzing, Improv.; "On the Border" Morris dance team.



4:00-4:30 PM  Young Tradition Vermont "Fiddleheads" & Harp students with Dominique Dodge

4:30-4:45 PM  Dominique Dodge (harp)

4:45-5:00 PM  Benedict Koehler (uilleann pipes) & Hilari Farrington (harp)

5:00-6:00 PM   "Open Stage" Concert-  Spontaneous ensembles welcome. Sign up in advance, or during the day. Limit of 1 tune or medley of tunes **5 minutes total** per performer.


6:00-7:00 PM   Open Session during Supper– all welcome to play and listen.



7:00-8:30 PM   Evening Dance- English Country Dancing to live music played by members of "Hearts Ease"- Gail Griffith, Marilee Urbanczyk and invited Festival musicians- Callers Sharon Schenkel, Wendy Gilchrist, & Bruce Kokernot
