Carolan Festival Worcester, VT

Our festival is a gathering of people who play, listen, sing, or dance to
the music of Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), Irish harper and composer.

Country Dance: Introduction to English Country Dancing to live music played by musicians attending the Festival (click for List of Tunes & dances) (same as in 2015). (More modern English Country Dances are done to Carolan tunes, than to those by any other composer, other than Anonymous!) Experienced dancers available and happy to help beginners!

11:00 AM-Noon "Carolan Standards" Session (easier tunes, slower tempo): Sheebeg & Sheemore, Fanny Power, Blind Mary, Col. John Irwin (59), Captain O'Kane, Eleanor Plunkett

1:00-1:30 PM  Concert: Young Tradition Vermont "Fiddleheads" with Featured Performer, Dominique Dodge

1:30-2:30 PM  Tune Workshop (all instruments): Andrea Mori- "Wonderful, but lesser known, tunes"

HOUSE:

10:00-11:00 AM  Máire Ní Cathasaigh Workshop (all instruments) "Authentic O'Carolan" - Turlough O'Carolan expressed himself musically in several styles. He composed some music with Baroque influence, as well as Irish court harp music, and some traditional Irish dance music. Each needs a different approach. You wouldn't play a slow air that sounded baroque, or a baroque piece that sounded like a slow air. Máire will take familiar tunes and teach snippets of each in their specific authentic style to give you a real feel of the differences. ALL LEVELS. NO MUSIC READING REQUIRED. RECORDING DEVICES WELCOME.  **Separate Admission fee $30 - get $5 off Festival Admission**  Please register in advance! NOTE: pay for 1 Workshop with Máire and listen in on the other Workshop for free!

11:00 AM-Noon  Máire Ní Cathasaigh Workshop (for Harpers)-  ALL LEVELS. NO MUSIC READING REQUIRED. RECORDING DEVICES WELCOME. **Separate Admission fee $30 - get $5 off Festival Admission**  Please register in advance**limited to 15**! NOTE: pay for 1 Workshop with Máire and listen in on the other Workshop for free!

2:15-3:00 PM  Song Workshop:  Gord Fisch - Learn to sing two songs set to Carolan tunes:  O'Carolan's Tribute and Sheebeg and Sheemore. All instruments and voices welcome.

  

BARNYARD TENT:

11:00 AM-Noon  Carolan Jam with John Mallery- "Improvisational"

1:00-1:30 PM  "Carolan Favorites" Session (moderately difficult): Carolan's Draught, Carolan's Concerto, Geo. Brabazon 2nd Air, Bridget Cruise 3rd Air, Lord Inchiquin, Morgan Magan, Mrs. Maxwell 1st Air

1:30-3:00 PM   English Country Dancing (on the lawn): Wendy Gilchrist, Bruce Kokernot, & Sharon Schenkel will teach English Country Dances (more modern English Country Dances are done to Carolan tunes than to those by any other composer, other than Anonymous!)- to live music led by Carol Compton, with Martha McDaniel, Joanne Garton, Laura Coppock, Scott Berry, Dave Beaufait and Festival musicians sitting in.

HARPERS'  HAVEN (ongoing)- Leaders/Facilitator: Mary Paul

ANYWHERE (ongoing)- impromptu ensembles and partners gather!

MAIN TENT (3:00-6:00 PM for all activities):

3:30-4:30 PM   Dance Performances & Demonstrations with Festival Musicians- Style of your choice, or be creative! Request a tune, or dance to whatever is being played. (Irish Ceili Dance "The Rakes of Mallow", English Country Dance demonstration, Waltzing, Improv.) "A Sworded Affair" (Rapper Team); "On the Border" Morris dancers

4:30-5:30 PM   "Open Stage" Concert-  Spontaneous ensembles welcome. Sign up in advance, or during the day. Limit of 1 tune or medley of tunes **5 minutes total** per performer.

6:00-7:00 PM   Open Session during Supper– all welcome to play and listen.
